Definition: What is Candle Range Theory?
Candle Range Theory (CRT) is a proprietary, rule-based trading methodology developed by Sajjad Riaz. It treats the high and low of a key benchmark candle (typically on the Daily or 4-Hour timeframe) as a definitive boundary range. Rather than trading breakout continuations, CRT recognizes that institutional participants engineer liquidity sweeps beyond these range boundaries to fill large orders, before reversing price back inside toward opposite-side liquidity.
1. The Flaw in Traditional Support and Resistance
Most retail traders draw dozens of horizontal lines across their charts based on historical highs and lows from weeks or months ago. When price approaches one of these levels, they place orders expecting the line to hold.
In reality, institutional algorithms do not trade old horizontal levels. Major institutions need liquidity — large clusters of resting orders — to execute massive position sizes without creating excessive slippage. These order clusters always accumulate in the same obvious places: just above the most recent candle high (buy stops) and just below the most recent candle low (sell stops).
2. The Three Phases of Candle Range Theory
Every valid CRT execution follows a repeatable three-phase sequence:
Range Definition
Identify a significant expansion candle on a higher timeframe (Daily or 4H). Mark its absolute high and low. This establishes your active battlefield.
The Liquidity Sweep
Price pushes past the range high or low, triggering stop-losses. Instead of continuing, price wicks and closes back inside the boundary, confirming order absorption.
Target Run
Once liquidity on one side is cleared, price systematically expands toward the opposite range boundary to hunt the counterpart liquidity pool.
3. The CRT Anatomy & Chart Blueprint
Below is the conceptual anatomy of a bullish CRT reversal setup after a liquidity sweep below a benchmark candle range:
4. The Signature Edge: Inside Bar Integration
While many traders attempt to trade liquidity sweeps blindly by guessing the bottom of a wick, Sajjad Riaz introduces a strict confirmation filter: The Inside Bar.
An inside bar is a candle whose high is lower than the previous candle's high, and whose low is higher than the previous candle's low. It represents temporary volatility compression.
Why Combine CRT with Inside Bars?
- Eliminates Knives Catching: You never buy while price is still falling. The inside bar proves that selling pressure has halted.
- Tight, Objective Invalidation: Your stop loss is placed precisely beneath the sweep wick, keeping risk minimal (often 10–15 pips on Forex, $2–$3 on Gold).
- Mechanical Entry: You enter on the break of the inside bar high in the direction of the opposing range. There is zero ambiguity.
5. How Candle Range Theory (CRT) Compares to Retail S/R
How does Candle Range Theory compare to conventional retail trading methods?
| Attribute | Retail Support/Resistance | Candle Range Theory (CRT) |
|---|---|---|
| Zone Definition | Historical horizontal lines | Active Candle High/Low Boundaries |
| Subjectivity | High (traders pick different levels) | Binary & Objective (Exact wicks) |
| Breakout Handling | Trades breakout continuation | Anticipates liquidity sweep fakeout |
| Execution Trigger | Touch of line / generic candlestick | Inside bar breakout confirmation |
| Average Risk-to-Reward | 1:1 to 1:1.5 | 1:1 to 1:2 |
6. Timeframe Hierarchy: Your Timeframe Has a Boss
A common mistake is applying CRT on a 1-minute or 5-minute chart in isolation. In the market, lower timeframes are constantly subordinate to higher timeframes:
The Boss (Daily / 4-Hour Timeframe)
Establishes the macro CRT range, higher timeframe draw on liquidity, and trend bias.
The Manager (1-Hour Timeframe)
Maps EMA 200 orientation and filters out consolidations where ranges are overlapping.
The Worker (15-Minute / 5-Minute Timeframe)
Pinpoints the exact liquidity sweep wick, the inside bar sequence, and the sniper execution entry.
7. When Does CRT Fail? (Honest Limitations)
No trading system works 100% of the time. Legitimate trading education is defined by understanding when not to trade:
During Tier-1 macroeconomic releases (CPI, NFP, Interest Rate decisions), institutional slippage can cause candle bodies to blow completely through range boundaries without clean inside bar confirmations.
Late Asian sessions or bank holidays often generate false sweeps due to thin order book volume rather than genuine institutional absorption. Stick to London and New York sessions.
*Risk Rule: Never risk more than 1% to 2% of account equity on a single setup, regardless of how clean the sweep appears.
